First, what you're hunting
The aurora is the visible end of a chain that starts at the Sun. Charged particles ride the solar wind to Earth, get channelled by our magnetic field toward the poles, and collide with oxygen and nitrogen 100–300 km up — which glow, mostly green, sometimes red and violet. The stronger the disturbance (measured by the Kp index, 0–9), the further the glowing oval bulges away from the pole — and the further south (or north, for the aurora australis) it becomes visible.

Where: you may not need a plane ticket
The travel industry would like you to believe the aurora lives exclusively in Tromsø. The truth has tiers:
- The auroral zone (Kp 1–2 does it): Iceland, northern Norway/Sweden/Finland, Alaska, northern Canada. Displays most clear, dark nights of the season. If you're booking a dedicated trip, book here, for at least 3–5 nights — cloud is the real enemy, not activity.
- The occasional zone (Kp 4–6): Scotland, northern England, Ireland, the northern US, southern New Zealand and Tasmania for the australis. Several visible displays a year in the current active phase — if you know which hours to be outside.
- The storm-only zone (Kp 7+): southern England, central Europe, the mid-US. A few chances a year at the moment, unforgettable when they land — May 2024 reached Texas, southern France and beyond.
The under-told story: we're in the declining phase of Solar Cycle 25, and history says the biggest single storms arrive after the peak — the Halloween 2003 superstorms came two years past theirs. The lower-latitude chances aren't over; they're the headline. You haven't missed it.
When: season, moon, hours
- Season: you need real darkness, so at UK-and-north latitudes the season runs late August to mid-April. Around the equinoxes (late September, late March) Earth's field alignment makes storms measurably more effective — the best-odds weeks of the year.
- Moon: a full moon washes out faint displays. It won't kill a strong storm, but for marginal latitudes, favour the darker half of the month.
- Hours: the productive window is typically 22:00–02:00 local, and activity comes in surges (sub-storms) of twenty minutes to an hour. Patience beats one glance at midnight — the full timing logic is in the Tonight guide.
What it actually looks like (managing the big expectation)
From the auroral zone on a strong night: moving curtains, unmistakable colour, occasionally the whole sky. From the UK on a Kp 5 night: usually a grey-green glow or slow ribbons low on the northern horizon — your eye's night vision barely does colour. This is normal, not failure. Two consequences: first, dark-adapt for 15 minutes and guard it (every phone glance resets you; red-light mode helps). Second, use a camera as your scout — a 3-second night-mode phone exposure shows green before your eye does. If the photo shows structure, stay out: sub-storms build.
Picking your spot
- Face the display: clear northern horizon in the northern hemisphere (southern for the australis). At marginal latitudes the show sits low — a hill or treeline in the way is fatal.
- Kill the light: get beyond streetlights; even 10–15 minutes' drive out of town changes everything. Dark-sky sites are ideal but a dark lay-by works.
- Check the spot's own sky: cloud is hyper-local. An hourly cloud forecast for the viewing spot's coordinates — not your town centre — is the difference between a clearing and a car park. (This is exactly why AurorAlert lets you save any coordinates as your location.)
- Comfort is endurance: more layers than you think, a flask, something to sit on, and a red torch. The people who see sub-storm peaks are the ones still outside.
Photographing it — phone first
Modern phones are genuinely good at this. Phone: night mode, 3-second exposure (longer if it allows), lens wiped, propped dead still or on a mini tripod, tap-focus on a bright star, and shoot the northern sky in a slow arc. Camera: widest lens, manual mode, f/2.8 or the widest you have, ISO 1600–3200, 5–15 s (shorter for fast-moving displays), manual focus at infinity, tripod non-negotiable. The realistic first-timer's plan
- Learn your number — the Kp your location needs (the app shows it; the Tonight page has a UK table).
- Pre-scout one dark spot with a low northern horizon within 20 minutes of home. Save its coordinates.
- Set an alert that respects all four conditions — Kp for your latitude, darkness, cloud, and (if you like) your own thresholds. Then stop checking apps.
- When the nudge comes: layers, flask, red light, spot, 15 minutes of dark adaptation, camera scout, patience through the lulls.
